During the summer of 2022, Madison County endured another critical incident that weighed heavily on the first responders involved. The question arose, " Do we have any help to offer our first responders after a critical incident?" After much research, discussions, and thought, Madison County Emergency Management hosted a Critical Incident Stress Management Training Class over three days in January 2023 with Instructor Carol Staben Burroughs, with a stunning 47 participants from various counties in Montana in attendance. After such a fantastic turnout, the idea of forming a Madison County team transformed into a combined team with our neighboring county, Beaverhead. Jennifer Martens with Madison County and BJ Klose with Beaverhead County began the Madison/Beaverhead County CISM Team on March 8,2023, with a fantastic support system. Unfortunately, in the first responder world, the heaviness of the incident doesn't stay at the scene. It follows everyone home. They still push through and get up the next shift to do it again selflessly. When there are critical incidents in our counties, we can schedule a debrief with the first responders who are directly involved, whether volunteers or paid. The events of the incident are gently unpacked with no blame shifting. Resources are provided locally and non-locally; some are anonymous if anyone wants to talk privately. Supporting your brothers and sisters in the first-responder world is essential. Our job is to assist the public during their worst days, reach out, and offer a hand to our fellow responders when they struggle. We are all in this together.

Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) is an intervention protocol developed specifically for dealing with traumatic events. It is a formal, highly structured and professionally recognized process for helping those involved in a critical incident to share their experiences, vent emotions, learn about stress reactions and symptoms. It is NOT psychotherapy. It is a confidential, voluntary and educative process, sometimes called 'psychological first aid'. First developed for use with military combat veterans and then civilian first responders (police, fire, ambulance, emergency workers, disaster rescuers), it has now been adapted and used virtually everywhere there is a need to address traumatic impact in peoples lives. - Source: https://www.criticalincidentstress.com/what_is_cism_

The mission of the Madison/Beaverhead County Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) Team is to provide timely and comprehensive support to first responders following critical and traumatic incidents. Our primary goal is to promote the psychological well-being and resilience of these dedicated individuals, enabling them to cope effectively with the emotional challenges of their demanding roles.

Our vision is to create a culture of support and resilience within the first responder community in Madison County and Beaverhead County. We strive to be recognized as a trusted resource that offers immediate and compassionate assistance to first responders during their times of need. Through our efforts, we aim to contribute to the long-term mental health and overall well-being of our local heroes.
